Major Calvert graduated from the
Royal Military College in 1958 and was allotted to the Royal Regiment of
Australian Artillery. He has served in a number of regimental appointments
including operational service in Borneo in 1965. In 1968, he transferred to the
Australian Army Aviation Corps and was appointed Officer Commanding 161
(Independent) Reconnaissance Flight on 4 June 1970.
During his tour
of duty in Vietnam, Major Calvert pursued with great diligence the aim of
maintaining his unit at the highest possible level of efficiency in every
respect. He constantly sought ways of improving the operational effectiveness of
the Flight and, in a considerable measure, succeeded in this aim while at the
same time establishing a high level of administrative efficiency. This
satisfactory result was largely the result of his personal diligence, enthusiasm
and drive.
His personal qualities of
leadership and command contributed in a significant degree to the high standards
reached by his unit to the ultimate benefit of the 1st Australian Task Force in
their operational tasks against the enemy.
