Staff Sergeant Robert Arthur Young
enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 13 February 1962. He served with the
3rd Casualty Clearing Station and the School of Army Health and was posted to
161st (Independent) Reconnaissance Flight on 12 September 1967.
Upon his arrival
at 161st (Independent) Reconnaissance Flight Staff Sergeant Young immediately
set about reorganising the flight medical section and medical records which up
until that time had been controlled by junior and inexperienced medical
assistants.
By his insistence
on the highest possible standards and his close personal supervision he quickly
developed the flight's staff into a highly efficient section. Having organised
161st (Independent) Reconnaissance Flight medical section, Staff Sergeant Young
then found time to volunteer his service to other units at Nui Dat and soon
organised their medical sections in a similar manner to which he organised his
own.
Staff Sergeant
Young also volunteered his services to his unit Civil Affairs program and in his
capacity as a medical assistant treated over three thousand Vietnamese patients
in the village of Xuyen Moc and accordingly earned their gratitude and
admiration.
During the period
26 March 1968 to 2 April 1968, he further volunteered his services to the
Australian Surgical Team at Bien Hoa and during this period earned the respect
of the members of this team as an efficient and capable medical assistant.
By his
dedication, his efficiency and his general ability as a medical assistant Staff
Sergeant Young has brought credit upon himself, his unit, and the Australian
Army.
